The
Human Givens approach looks at each person holistically
considering the psychological needs and resources that
human beings have evolved over millions of years.
Needs
These
are the needs over and above requirements for food and
water, shelter etc. as identified by The European Therapy
Studies Institute:
•
security
– safe environment in which we can thrive and develop
•
attention
– to give and receive
•
autonomy
and Control
•
being
emotionally connected to other
•
feeling
part of a wider community
•
friendship
and Intimacy
•
privacy
•
status
in social groups
•
competence
and Achievement
•
meaning
and Purpose
Resources
Human
resources have evolved to meet needs and include:
•
long
term memory which add to our innate knowledge and learning
•
the
ability to build rapport, empathise and connect to others
•
an
imagination which focuses our attentionaway from emotion
so we can solve difficuties creatively and objectively
•
a
conscious rational mind which checks out emotions so
we can question,analsyse and plan
•
the
ability to ‘know’ and understand the world
through metaphorical pattern matching
•
an
observing self
•
a
dreaming brain
When
human beings use their resources well and get their
needs met in reasonable balance, they are able to lead
fulfilling lives. When needs are seriously compromised
and resources are much misused, there are difficulties.
