  Depression.........

.........is not a biological illness
.........is NOT merely a chemical imbalance in the brain
.........is learned and created by the way we interact with our environment
.........is a strong emotion
.........is a state of locked focused attention which leads to negative thinking
.........tells us that something is wrong and we are somehow stuck
.........is an emotion which limits thinking and leads to an emotionally inward focus
.........in most cases is NOT difficult to overcome

The Human Givens approach to depression looks at each person holistically considering the psychological needs and resources that human beings have evolved over millions of years. It has been the subject of major articles in leading journals such as New Scientist

Cycle of Depression

Depression commonly involves a recognizable cycle of mood and behaviour (see article). Typically, someone with an already pessimistic outlook may begin to catastrophise a difficulty they are currently experiencing. They may also have a tendency to blame themselves when things go wrong. They emotionally introspect which leads to excessive dreaming which in turn leads to tiredness upon waking and an inability to engage with everyday matters resulting in a lack of motivation. As the days go by they gradually withdraw into themselves, eradicating purpose and meaning from their life.

The Symptoms of Depression may include

depressed mood
disturbed sleep
exhaustion
loss of pleasure in usual activities
disturbed appetite
agitation
difficuties in thinking
recurrent thoughts of death or suicide

Therapy

The therapy for someone with depression may include some of the following things:

relaxation techniques
giving information
guided Imagery
challenging perceptions and behaviour
reframe thinking style
use of metaphor/story
teaching a skill

The Human Givens approach seeks to make immediate practical changes in the cycle of depression, beginning with the very first session. The therapy does not need to be long term and you should expect to notice ways to feel better from the outset.
