‘Giving
up smoking is easy. I’ve done it hundreds of times.’ –
Mark Twain.
Mark Twain’s witty observation underlines a difficulty
that is common with addictions of many kinds, from
smoking and alchohol abuse, gambling, over-eating,
sex addiction all the way to long term dependencies on
hard and soft drugs. It is not just stopping but
staying stopped.
Intelligent therapy does not promise magic bullets and
instant success; research shows that relapse too often
follows ‘miracle’ cures. However, realistic treatment
that is well focused and well informed can make rapid
and effective changes in all patterns of addiction where
the client has made a clear decision to co-operate. Such
changes can be permanent .
Human
Givens counsellors
work with addictions
from an understanding of:
•
how addiction hijacks brain processes
•
social patterns of addiction
•
the role of imagination in addictions
•
the hypnotic power of many addictions
HG counsellors also help clients clarify motivations and
develop realistic change strategies, to make use of relaxation
skills, to understand the needs and the resources for
natural satisfaction with which evolution has endowed
them. Past experiences with a bearing on current addiction
patterns are dealt with and new behaviours encouraged
and strengthened. Ways of dealing with unhelpful life
circumstances are addressed. Guided imagery is often used
to set up expectations of success.
Simpler
patterns of addiction may be sufficiently altered in two
to three sessions. More complex dependency may take longer. |
